Good day to all our Leopard's Tail readers!

September is a busy busy month…. Heritage Month, Tourism Month, National Braai Day and it’s Spring. It’s hard to keep track of all the goings on. We are celebrating our month of September by showing our superb guests our beautiful heritage on our reserve and, as you will read from our ranger walking safaris reports, it has been a month to remember. As I am typing this, I have just received a picture of guests watching a group of Cheetah on the hunt via our Leopard Mountain Whatsapp group…. Wow! What a remarkable place we live in.

Our Reserve

This month at the lodge has been a month full of incredible encounters from Elephants chasing Lions to Rhinos chasing Lions. It is safe to say the Lion is not the King of Beasts at Leopard Mountain. To mention a few sightings we have had here at the lodge I would like to start with one of the most recent ones. Alden and Robynne came across a lioness with a kill while on a game drive. As they inched closer, two cubs popped up. The cubs being roughly seven months old have taken a keen interest in meat and were digging in with mom when all of a sudden an Elephant bull surprised them. He came hurtling out of the bush straight for mom and the cubs. The cubs turned on a dime and ran up the rocks as mom covered their retreat with snarls and a glare that would scare the most hardy assailant. However, this bull kept coming. Mom then sprang into action climbing the rocks to safety as the big Elephant bull proclaimed his dominance. He soon lost interest however, and walked off down the river.

Another exhilarating sighting occurred one night. We came across four White Rhinos surrounded on all fronts by nine Lions… two females, four cubs and three males. The Rhinos with their poor eyesight seemed hopeless as they turned and jived from side to side trying to smell the Lions who seemed to inch closer with each scuffle from the Rhinos’ feet.

Suddenly one Rhino bull seemed to pick up on one of the female’s scent and went screaming towards her with dust flying! The Lions broke rank and scattered into the nearby bushes. The Rhinos then made a break for it and scrambled up the bank of the dam with eager lion cubs in hot pursuit. I breathed a sigh of relief that these great beasts made it out of the confrontation with a good lesson learned rather than losing one of their comrades in a battle. While on the topic of cats, Robynne and Alden having great luck this month managed to see a Serval, a very shy and elusive cat, take a Guinea Fowl from mid air.

Hard to believe? Not so far-fetched because, when you stay Leopard Mountain, nature will surprise you with the most amazing experiences!

Walking Trails

This last month has been nothing but spectacular walking out on trail. Being out in the wilderness on foot gives one another perspective of the happenings all around you, one feels more unguarded and intimate and that is the true power of nature! After 74 hours spent out on trail this month, we racked some incredible sightings; from the adrenalin injecting Big 5, to the increasing amounts of insects and returning seasonal birds as we enter spring. Solve this Riddle

An apple begins with me and age too. I am in the midst of a man and foremost in every apprehension. You will find me in everyday and see me in all autumns. It's a pity that you cannot see me in the air and yet it's so wonderful to be a part of the great Atlantic ocean!

Guess who am I?
